In order to maintain kissable, soft lips, keep reading for tips on how I take care of my lips and find out how you can keep your lips smooth and soft.
I gently exfoliate my lips every day, and twice daily when I wear matte lipsticks. By gently, I mean using a product that is sugar based, and that has jojoba or olive oil in it, so that it is not too harsh for them.
My current favorite is from Lush. I use their bubble gum flavored lip scrub. In order to use this product, I make sure my lips have been cleaned and my lips are dry. Next, I take about a pinky tip amount (the amount that will fit on your pinky), and gently massage the scrub on my top lip and bottom lip. Lastly, I rinse my mouth with water. The instructions on this lip balm mention that you can lick it off if you would like, however, I find this counter productive, since licking your lips will dry them out more.
The Lush lip scrub retails for $9.95 and can be purchased here, or at your local Lush store.
Weekly lip maintenance
In addition, to exfoliating daily, I also use the Mary Kay Satin Lips Mask twice weekly. This lip mask, is more intense, and should only be used once or twice weekly.
To use this lip mask, I ensure my lips are clean and dry. Next, I apply the lip mask and let it sit on for about five minutes. I usually apply this product before getting into the shower, and once I am finished with my shower, I rinse off my lips with water. After using the lip mask, I make sure to apply the Mary Kay lip balm that goes with it.
The Satin Lips set retails for $18. Mary Kay is only sold by independent beauty consultants, for more information on how to purchase, click here or contact someone you know who sells Mary Kay.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
In addition to using lip scrubs, I also make sure that I use a hydrating lip balm nightly, or when I am not wearing any lip color. This is important for several reasons. If you are like me, I sleep with my mouth open sometimes… (I know this because my dear husband has caught me, and I’ve awaken to pictures the next morning). Sleeping with your mouth open can dry your lips out, especially in the winter time.
Look for lip balms that contain natural ingredients like avocado oil, shea butter and vitamin E. These ingredients are known for their hydrating properties and will ensure your lips retain moisture. I will also use good old fashion Vaseline, which has a petroleum jelly base, which is also good for hydration.
And if at all possible, do not to lick your lips! Licking your lips actually dries them out more, causing you to want to continue licking your lips [source]. No one wants ashy lips, but be sure to keep that lip balm or chap stick near by to apply when you feel the urge to lick them.
